I think you'll find that the engine is more likely to be a bump start in which case no electric start can be used, it is easy enough to tell; do the rear wheels turn easily or is there some stiff compression from the engine?

I don't think you can run any electric start system on a direct drive 100cc, you can on some but I've never heard of sirio doing one. Bump-starting isn't all that difficult and so long as you're allowed it only takes one other person to get it going easily.

100cc direct drive is too powerful to be electric started from any standard starter - i do not know of one that can

i race 85cc direct drive and i can start that with an electric start but i had to make it more powerful

there are quite a few dom, take tkm's for example, and then there are some weird european 100cc engines that run a clutch etc.

Dom I cant see why you would have to make a starter more powerful for a raket, they dont exactly have much compression

probably just mine - either that or it was the starter - it was playing up a bit recently - could have been a longer term problem - we sorted it out anyway

i reckon that it was starter, not kart thinking about it now - also the fact it is a lightweight one means it is a bit less powerful than those like graeme's

yeah - good point bout the tkms jamie

i'll probably just shut up now! :-X

Thomas -

Does the carburetor stick out the side, or does it face front?

If it sticks out the side, that's a rotary valve motor, probably an ST-50 (circa 1974.) I have one, and have some information on it.
If it sticks out the side, that's a newer, reed valve motor.

Either way, if you don't want to use direct drive, you can run a clutch off the left (mag) side with a crank extension, but only if the frame has room at the axle for the large sprocket on that side of the motor. Some sprint frames have a diagonal cross tube near the axle that wouldn't allow space for a sprocket. If you have a reed motor you could also run the clutch on the right side, eliminating that issue.

If you use a clutch, you can start the motor with a separate kart starter that's inserted into (or sometimes over) a special nut you put on the opposite end of the crank. You obviously need someone to hold and operate that starter while you sit in the seat. It's a lot easier to insert the starter if you drive from the mag side however.

This is the way they're used on an enduro (laydown) kart, usually with a belt drive and axle clutch. For sprint, you could use an oil-filled DXL clutch (4-spring,) on the crank extension, and a chain. You would still need that extension shaft. They're available from LAD, or from some online kart shops (like Cometkartsales.com).
You would also need a separate battery kart starter, and a starter nut for your motor.

If you have a rotary, otr other questions, email me at RodneyHytonen@verizon.com

HTH,
Rod
